What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a painful overuse injury caused by inflammation and strain of your plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a ligament that runs from your heel to the ball of your foot. Walking, running, and other activities without the right support can aggravate the plantar fascia over time, causing it to become inflamed and irritated.

What are the symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis symptoms include:

  • Heel pain
  • Pain in the arch of the foot
  • Foot pain with your first few steps in the morning or after resting
  • Swelling around the heel

How does a podiatrist diagnose plantar fasciitis?

Dr. Morgan reviews your medical records and asks about your symptoms, including when the pain started, where it’s located, and if certain activities, like walking or exercise, worsen your symptoms.

Next, she completes a thorough podiatric exam. Dr. Morgan will gently palpate your plantar fascia and Achilles tendon to identify areas of tenderness. She will have you walk around the office to observe your gait (how you walk).

Dr. Morgan may also order diagnostic imaging, like X-rays or an MRI, as part of your work-up. These tests let her see the bones, joints, and soft tissues in your foot and ankle.

How does a podiatrist treat plantar fasciitis?

At Blue Sky Foot & Ankle, Dr. Morgan treats plantar fasciitis with a comprehensive and integrative approach. She could suggest:

  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Rest from aggravating activities
  • Wearing supportive shoes
  • Orthotics (prescription shoe inserts)
  • Immobilization with a walking cast
  • Physical therapy
  • Taking over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication
  •  Corticosteroid injections

Most often, plantar fasciitis responds to conservative treatment. Dr. Morgan will monitor your symptoms at regular checkups and will adjust your care as needed. If your heel pain fails to improve despite treatment, surgery may be recommended.
