What are custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are prescription shoe inserts designed specifically for your feet. They slip inside closed-toed shoes, providing additional support.

Custom orthotics look like the shoe inserts you buy over-the-counter. However, instead of being one-size-fits-all, they accommodate the shape and structure of your feet through a custom shape and design. This personalized design can provide lasting relief for various foot and ankle problems.

What types of foot and ankle problems benefit from orthotics?

At Blue Sky Foot & Ankle, Dr. Morgan prescribes orthotics to treat various foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Hallux limitus
  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Plantar fasciitis

Sometimes, Dr. Morgan recommends orthotics for diabetic patients in order to prevent complications. Custom orthotics can reduce excess pressure on certain areas of your feet.

What does getting orthotics involve?

Getting orthotics at Blue Sky Foot & Ankle takes three visits several weeks apart.

If Dr. Morgan determines you’re a candidate for orthotics, she takes 3D digital scans of your feet. Afterward, Dr. Morgan sends your scans to an orthotic lab that uses the scans to design and create a pair of custom orthotics.

When your orthotics are finished, you return to Blue Sky Foot & Ankle. Dr. Morgan will evaluate their design and fit, and you will try them out in the office by walking around. She will explain the orthotic break-in instructions and explain how to protect your orthotics from wear-and-tear.

Are orthotics covered by insurance?

It depends. Most health insurance plans cover at least some of the cost of prescription orthotics, but every policy varies.
